Raw POV Magazine covers culture, travel, society and sport, with a particular interest in Latin American and Brazilian communities in Canada and in the people whose work keeps popular art alive.

How this started

Raw POV began with Graciele, a journalist who wanted to understand how websites are actually built rather than just writing for ones other people ran. What started as a project to learn turned into something with an audience, mostly because she did not do it alone. A few friends who like to write joined in, and the thing became a publication.

That origin still shapes how the site works. Raw POV is small, it is independent, and nobody here inherited a newsroom. Every process on this site exists because somebody built it on their own time. The site publishes in English, for readers in Canada with an interest in the Americas, and it stays small on purpose: a short list of writers who know the beats they cover, rather than a wire desk trying to cover everything.

What we cover

Four areas, and they are connected more than they look.

  • Culture. Music, dance and the traditions that travel with people when they move countries. A lot of our coverage sits with Latin American and Brazilian communities in Canada, because that is a scene we know and because it is chronically under reported. We write about the dance halls and the bands as much as the headline acts.
  • Travel. Practical guides to Canada, written for people planning a real trip with a real budget rather than for a search engine. We update these when the underlying facts change, not on a fixed schedule.
  • Society. Data driven explainers. When a statistics release or a corporate result lands, we read the actual numbers and explain what they do and do not show.
  • Sport. Mostly football, mostly the parts of it that are about engineering, economics and infrastructure rather than transfer gossip.

What we are interested in

Raw POV pays attention to popular art and to the labour behind it. The accordion player at a Friday night forró has usually worked a full week before picking up the instrument. The teacher running a beginners class in a rented community hall built that scene without a budget. Those are the stories we go looking for, and they are the ones that rarely get covered anywhere else.

That is a choice about what we write about. It is not a licence to bend facts. We report what is documented, we attribute it, and we let readers reach their own conclusions.

How we work

Three commitments govern everything published here, and they apply the same way whether a piece is a 400 word update or a 2,000 word guide.

We do not invent anything. No fabricated quotes, no estimated numbers presented as reported ones, no filled in details. When data is incomplete or a trend cannot be calculated from the available figures, we say so in the article rather than smoothing over it.

We credit the people who did the reporting. When a piece builds on someone else’s original journalism, we name the outlet, name the reporter, and link to the original in the first few paragraphs and again at the end. Our contribution is the context, the verification and the analysis, and we mark clearly which parts are ours.

We show our work. Most articles carry a “Sources and method” block explaining where each figure came from, which calculations we performed ourselves, and what we did not independently verify.

The full version of these standards, including our corrections policy and our position on advertising, is in our Editorial Policy.

Who writes here

Raw POV is written by a small team. Articles are published under the byline of the journalist who reviewed and approved the piece, and that byline means that person stands behind the facts in it.

  • Graciele founded Raw POV and oversees the publication.
  • Paty Vaugh writes on culture and community.
  • Raquel Camargo writes on society, data and travel.
  • Lucy Soul writes on sport, business and consumer affairs.

Each byline links to an author page listing that writer’s published work, so readers can check the pattern of what someone covers rather than judging a single article in isolation.

Where we are, and how to reach us

Raw POV is based in Canada and writes mainly for readers here, with an eye on Brazil and the wider Americas.

If you have a story you think we should cover, our Send Your News page explains what we look for and how to send it. If you spot an error in something we published, that same address is where to flag it: our Editorial Policy describes what happens after that, from checking the claim against the original source to correcting the article and noting the change.
